Scout group raises almost £1,000 from afternoon tea
By BEAVERS, cubs and scouts from 10th Warrington West presented staff at the Co-op with a gift of cupcakes as thank you for the store manager’s support for their fundraising afternoon tea. The group, based at St Mary's church, held the event, which attracted almost 100 people at Whittle Hall Community Centre. Guests were treated to sandwiches, scones and homemade cakes with unlimited tea and coffee while children took part in Easter crafts. Parents of children at the group spent all morning preparing the food and worked tirelessly in the kitchen in the afternoon. Front-of-house were the scouts, who served guests with their food and drinks. Many of the guests commented on the politeness and care that the scouts took while serving. The event was a great success, raising more than £930. The money will be used to support the group’s scouting adventures over the coming year. Groups all across Warrington have places for young people and adults. Anyone interested in finding out more about starting their own scouting adventure should call Ian Gornall 07808 066189 who will provide details of their nearest group. Two-day Sandstone Trail trek open for entries
By MILLINGTON-based charity the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust is inviting walkers to join them for a two day trek along the Sandstone Trail. The walk takes place on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday April 29 to raise funds for terminally ill, disabled and disadvantaged children from across the north west. The team of walkers will start on Saturday in Frodsham and end 55km (34 miles) later the next day in Whitchurch. The trek will take in the famous trail’s sandstone ridges, Manly Common, Delamere Forest and Ridgeway Wood on day one, after which participants will have a well-earned barbecue and overnight stay at Bunkhouse accommodation. The following morning they will continue their trek past Peckforton Castle towards the flats of Shropshire before they reach their goal at Whitchurch via the Llangollen Canal. Jure Modic, the charity’s challenge fundraiser will be joining the group, and said: “We're blessed to have some beautiful countryside on our doorstep here in Cheshire, this truly is a magnificent part of the world. "There's no better way of experiencing the great outdoors than getting out walking in the hills. It's going to be a fabulous couple of days with amazing views, great company and some fantastic walking. "More importantly, we’re hoping to raise lots of money which will enable children from our region to experience the fun and freedom of childhood that most of us take for granted, but sadly for them is so far out of reach.” You can register your place (or places, this is perfect for individuals or a corporate team) for £50, and pledge to raise a minimum of £200 per person. Woman who lost more than six stone to run London Marathon
By A WOMAN who couldn’t run to the end of her drive before losing weight will be running the Virgin Money London Marathon after losing more than six-and-a-half stone. Rachel Finch, 29, joined the Great Sankey Slimming World group in January 2016 after her weight began to affect her health. Now – just over two years later – she will be representing Slimming World when she runs the 26.2-mile course as part of their national team of 10 slimmers from across the UK and Ireland. Rachel first joined the Great Sankey Slimming World group, run by consultant Jenny Osborne, weighing 17 stone 2lbs after developing gallstones. The doctor put this down to poor eating habits. She was also offered a discounted ticket at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi as the attendant told her she wouldn’t fit on some of the rides. Rachel, a midwifery student, said: “I can’t wait to run the marathon. Two years ago, I couldn’t run to the end of my drive – if someone had told me I’d be running for pleasure one day I’d never have believed them. "The progress I’ve made has been unthinkable and to go on to run the marathon will just be a dream come true.” After joining Slimming World Rachel began following the food optimising healthy eating plan and grew to love cooking. She swapped her diet of takeaways and chocolate for healthy cooking, wholesome meals from scratch including her favourite dish spaghetti bolognese with plenty of vegetables. Rachel said: “When my consultant Jenny explained all about the eating plan, I couldn’t quite believe that I could lose weight without going hungry and still enjoy all my favourite meals just by making changes to the way I prepared and cooked them. “I’ve never eaten so well in my life. And I need all the fuel I can get for marathon training – so potatoes, pasta, and rice are all regularly on the menu.” Rachel has now completed numerous half marathons and can’t wait to run her first marathon. Collectively, the marathon team have lost more than 85 stone and will be taking on the famous run on April 22 to raise money for Cancer Research UK and the Irish Cancer Society, and to increase awareness of how keeping a healthy weight reduces the risk of developing cancer. Supporting the charities is particularly important to Rachel, who has seen close family members suffer with the disease including her grandparents. She added: “I can’t wait for the atmosphere on race day and to cross that finish line. Achieving this dream would never have been possible before losing weight. I‘m excited to give something back and raise money for Cancer Research UK. Cancer touches so many of us and I believe that it is now more important than ever that we stand together to beat it. Without charities like Cancer Research UK and the Irish Cancer Society this wouldn’t be possible.” Anyone who would like to sponsor Rachel and the Slimming World Marathon team can do so by visiting ustgiving.com/fundraising/swlondonmarathonteam2018. The Newmarket Slimming World group which is held at Kings Community Centre every Monday at 9.30am, 11.30am, 3.30pm, 5.30pm and 7.30pm, and at Eagles Sports Social Club every Wednesday at 5.15pm and 7.15pm. COLUMN: MP ‘deeply concerned’ over spate of crime in Warrington South
By IN this week's column, Warrington South MP Faisal Rashid speaks about the spate of burglaries in his constituency. Over recent weeks there has been an increase in the number of domestic burglaries in Warrington South. Following meetings with concerned constituents, councillors and Cheshire Police, it has become clear that the burglaries are specifically targeting members of ethnic minority communities with the primary aim for gold, cash and jewellery. I am deeply concerned by the reports I have received and since the incidents began I have been working closely with the communities affected, as well as the police, to help in any way I can. Understandably, this spate of crime is causing concern and many residents have been left feeling unsafe. This feeling was shared by nearly 200 constituents present at the meetings I have attended on this issue. While insured valuables can be replaced, the psychological damage and trauma to victims and their families will always remain. I remain deeply concerned about this matter and fully committed to ensuring that the people of ethnic minorities, and indeed residents from all communities, feel safe within their own homes. Visible community policing is vital to crime prevention and so it is troubling to read the latest crime figures for this year, which show that police numbers are now at the lowest level in three decades. In the north west, since 2010, we have lost over 4,000 police officers and over 600 police community support officers. In the face of central Government funding cuts comes the increase in recorded crime. Since 2010, crime in Cheshire has increased by 32 per cent and domestic burglaries have increased by 31 per cent. This is no coincidence. Our hard-working frontline police officers are working night and day to catch those responsible for the recent spate of burglaries in Warrington and I want to commend them for their work. However, cuts to policing budgets are leaving our police officers fighting hard to keep the public safe with fewer officers per head than ever before. It is high time this Government took notice and understood how their cuts to budgets are affecting key issues like combatting crime. I have written to the Prime Minister about the spate of targeted burglaries in Warrington South and I have urged her to look again at the cuts to police budgets to make sure that we have enough police officers to keep our streets safe. Bents garden centre's growing support for Alzheimer’s Society
By A CASH boost of more than £22,000 was donated to the Alzheimer’s Society thanks to the fundraising efforts of staff at Bents Garden and Home and generous donations from customers. The organisation was named as the garden’s centre’s charity of the year for 2017. Penny Hamer from Alzheimer’s Society visited Bents to accept the donation. She was joined by Zachary Daniels, trustee at St Rocco’s Hospice, which is the centre’s 2018 charity of the year – a cause which was chosen by Bents’ customers in a vote held earlier in the year. Matthew Bent, managing director at Bents Garden and Home, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have raised so much for the Alzheimer’s Society and believe our money will be used to help people living with the condition in our local community. “A big thank you to all our customers and colleagues who have helped throughout the year to make the campaign such a success. We are now looking forward to working with St Rocco’s Hospice and are keen to do just as well in 2018.” April 7, 2018 at 10:00AM via Warrington Guardian | News http://www.warringtonguardian.co.uk/news/16140541.Bents_garden_centre_s_growing_support_for_Alzheimer___s_Society/?ref=rss Lymm Aerial Installers of Warrington
All Mersey Gateway toll appeals put on hold pending review of legal challenge
By ALL Mersey Gateway bridge appeals against the tolls at the Traffic Penalty Tribunal are on hold pending a review of a decision on a case taken against Halton Council. The Traffic Penalty Tribunal (TPT) has issued a decision that a motorist was not liable to pay the toll for using the new Mersey Gateway bridge because Halton Council, the charging authority, has not specified the sum of the charge in the Mersey Gateway Road User Charging Order 2017. In the case of C vs Halton Borough Council, TPT adjudicator Andrew Barfoot said that Ms C, the appellant, was not liable to pay the £2 charge for using the bridge because the order does not specify that the charge is £2. According to the adjudicator, this does not comply with the requirements set out in the Transport Act 2000. On the evidence provided by the council the adjudicator also found that the council had failed to follow the commencement process contained in the Order itself. Halton Council does not agree with the adjudicator’s decision on either point and has applied for it to be reviewed, whilst also embarking on a consultation to make a fresh order that does specify the charges. The review application will be heard by a different adjudicator on May 8, 2018. All other appeals relating to the Mersey Gateway Bridge that are currently with The TPT have been delayed pending the outcome of the review decision. Halton Council says it is business as usual and motorists should continue to pay tolls to cross the Mersey Gateway. A Halton Council spokesman said:” “After taking independent legal advice the council and Mersey Gateway Crossings Board Ltd strongly dispute this decision made by the TPT. “The council are following due process and will rigorously dispute the adjudicator’s decision. “Given this is a live case it is inappropriate to go into the detail of the particular case. However, we are advised by our independent legal advisors, who are specialists in this field, that the current Road User Charging Scheme Order (which is based on the Orders originally agreed by the Department for Transport) is legally sound. “It’s business as usual on Mersey Gateway and motorists should continue to pay tolls to cross Mersey Gateway. Those who fail to do so will still face the risk of a penalty notice. “Since the new bridge opened to traffic in October, over 10 million vehicles have crossed the bridge with drivers benefiting from its quicker, easier and more reliable journeys. “Over this time, the council and the Mersey Gateway Crossings Board has received a number of comments and observations in respect of its operation, the Tolling Orders and the tolling regime. “We’ve already made plans to update the Road User Charging Order to address these observations and to clarify matters surrounding the tolling regime that some (including TPT) feel are not clear. We are also proposing that even more users can benefit from the new crossing with unlimited trips and exemptions. “A consultation to gather views about these proposed changes recently took place and the findings of the consultation will be published shortly. The £600 million bridge opened in October 2017, charging charging £2 per crossing for cars, £6 for a van or small lorry and £8 for a larger lorry or bus. As of February 2018, according to Halton Council approximately 242,690 penalty charges have been issued for failing to pay the charge. To date there have been more than 3,489 penalty charge notices appealed to the adjudicators. Halton Council has not contested 2,543 cases and a further 449 appeals have been heard and allowed by the adjudicators, resulting in the cancellation of the penalty charge. Some 456 appeals are currently on hold pending the outcome of the review on May 8, 2018. Four-year-old makes her TV debut for Lego advert
By WORKING in a toy shop is every child's dream but it was all in a day's work for this four-year-old from Latchford. Apple Mayers, who attends Tugboats Pre-School in Thelwall, made her TV debut in a Lego Duplo advert for The Imagination Station at Smyths Toys earlier this month. 'Disgruntled' residents call for change over public park maintenance fee
By RESIDENTS of a new build housing estate are calling for change after being charged £125 a year for the upkeep of a children's play area and woodland. Householders on the Persimmon Homes Riverside Point development, on Farrell Street, are paying the money to Greenbelt, a third party company, for the maintenance of a fenced off brook and children's play area, on Howley Lane. Since the Riverside Point estate was built in 2012, home owners said the initial payment of £63 per year, for general maintenance work carried out on the estate, has risen to £93 then to £125. Residents said they are 'disgruntled' with this fee as the spaces are accessible to the public, and prior to the estate were the responsibility of the council. One resident, who does not wish to be named, said: "Recently building companies have been in the headlines for extortionate leasehold fees and were ordered by government to change – surely maintenance companies also need investigating. "The estate has approximately 400 to 500 plots each paying £125 approximately per annum, so they are receiving in excess of £55,000 a year to maintain two small areas." Residents said they have made a number of attempts to liaise with Warrington Borough Council but this was unsuccessful. The council has 'no remit' regarding the issue, and the council tax residents pay covers others services such as road adoption and bin collection on the estate. A spokesman for Greenbelt said: "The open spaces and facilities at Farrell Lane are being maintained to the Written Statement of Services – however, we would urge anyone who would like to discuss the work programme and billing in more detail to contact us. "It should be noted the initial, estimated bill takes into consideration abnormal levels of illegal littering and anti-social behaviour, as well as additional costs for play area maintenance and woodland inspections. "Broken down, the bill is £125.33, including VAT – or the equivalent of £12.53 a month over the 10-month billing period. This is the sum that was highlighted in our point of sales literature for the developer in 2014. "Moreover, we envisage next year's itemised billing, reconciled with actual costs, being lower for customers. "We have engaged with customers through our dedicated customer care team and also visited customers on the development. "Our customer liaison officer Nick Upton also recently held a residents' meeting at St Elphin's Community Centre, which was attended by 30 residents and councillor Jean Flaherty. "The feedback given afterwards reflected the fact this was an informative and helpful meeting – we very much look forward to working with homeowner customers in the future." Persimmon Homes have been contacted for a comment.
